About Us
Cherry Street Baptist Church is a great church with a long and valued tradition. Cherry Street began with a vision and still has that vision today. That vision is to apply The Lord Jesus' command to reach people with the gospel and to disciple those that are reached.
Back in the 1920's, Mr. Bailey Smith felt the need for another Baptist Church in Attalla. He donated the property and contributed towards the building of the first structure which was to house the church in a small white frame building which cost approximately $200. Cherry Street was organized in October of 1922 with thirty members and began meeting and began meeting in that white frame building.
This being a Missionary Baptist Church, the ladies wanting to further missions, organized a WMU, with Mrs. Mary Smith as their president. One lady, so devoted to the work and ministry of WMU, would walk from her home on Lake Rhea Road each week to attend the meetings.
Through the years Cherry Street has grown in numbers, in buildings, and in her ministry to the community and the world. The present membership of Cherry Street Baptist is 428 resident and non-resident members.
Several young men have entered the ministry from the membership of this church. They are: Capp Countryman, Benis Dean Lowe, Herman Johnson, Billy Rigsby, Bobby Perry, Glenn Matthews, R.E. Keener, Alvin Quinn, Henry Smedley, Mark McCollum, Phillip Ellen, Lewis Haynie, Royce Lowman, Raymond Ashley, Joe Lancaster, John Dale Rector, David Bankson, Ronnie Hood and Jason Jackson.
THE FOLLOWING MEN HAVE SERVED CHERRY STREET AS PASTORS: C.O. Thompson, Walter Johnson, O.G. Garrett, Rufus Perry, L.A. Perry, Cicero Peek, Monroe Humphries, Ira Tidwell, Ray Chaple, Hoyt Wilks, J.A. Patterson, P.W. Mitchell, R.R. Mathews, George Fisher, M.S. Cunningham, Kenneth Spears, Charles O. Dinkins, Rolland Clemons, Roger Willmore, Dean Hampton, Jim Perkins and Larry Garrard
We who make up Cherry Street Baptist Church today look back on her heritage with humble gratitude for God's blessings and the dedicated saints He has used to minister and touch the lives of many. Our present missions statement is the same as when the Church began. We have one driving force which is the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). The functions of our Church remain the same: Evangelism, Discipleship, Ministry, Fellowship and Worship. We look to the future with faith and commitment to serve and minister in the Lord's name to this community and our world.
